David Vobora, a former “Mr. Irrelevant” in the NFL Draft, has become very relevant for the Seahawks.
The linebacker who played the past three seasons for the St. Louis Rams was signed by the team today. Running back Vai Taua was released to clear a spot on the 90-man roster.
Vobora (6-1, 239) got his “Mr. Irrelevant” tag when the Rams made him the final pick in the 2008 draft – the 252nd player selected overall.
Vobora started a game for the Rams as a rookie, becoming the first rookie selected last in the draft to do so since linebacker Marty Moore with the New England Patriots in 1994.
A product of Churchill High School in Eugene, Ore., and the University of Idaho, Vobora played in 34 games with the Rams. Ten of his 16 starts came in 2009, when he had a career-high 46 tackles. He posted the first two sacks of his NFL career last season. Vobora had eight tackles against the Seahawks in the 2009 season opener at CenturyLink Field.
Vobora also had 29 coverage tackles on special teams while playing with the Rams.
Taua, who had been signed Aug. 14, gained 15 yards on two carries in the Seahawks’ preseason home opener against the Vikings on Saturday night.
