The Seahawks have finished with a 7-9 record for the second straight season, losing 23-20 in OT to the Arizona Cardinals.

Sunday's game was a failure by the offense to score points and move the ball when they really needed to-combined with a very good Seattle defense which wasn't able stop a one-man show named Larry Fitzgerald. The All-Pro wideout may not have been stopped regardless of what team was defending him.

Fitzgerald caught nine passes for 149 yards, including a one-handed catch which set up the game-winning field goal.

"He's just an incredible football player and he's as good as you can get at this game," Pete Carroll. "I just marvel at the things he does."

The Cardinals were also able to run the ball at a pretty good clip, 4.2 per carry for 131 yards on 31 attempts.

The lasting image of this offensive unit for the offseason, may not be Tarvaris Jackson's 61-yard strike to rookie Ricardo Lockette in the fourth quarter, or the 178 yards gained on the ground, including 86 by Marshawn Lynch, rather it may be the final possession.

"We had a shot right at the end of regulation, we had a shot really on both sides of the ball in OT, we didn't get it done," said Carroll.

"We didn't do very well on third down, and it caught us. There were a couple of throws and catches that were there to be made or not made and we didn't get them. It basically came down to third down."

The Seahawks were 3 of 16 on third down Sunday.

"We wanted to get to 8-8 because we wanted to, it doesn't make a big difference in the big scheme of things," Carroll concluded. "But it does feel like something was there and we missed our shot at it."

"We just have to execute,” Jackson said via the Tacoma News Tribune. "Regardless of whatever the coach calls, we got to be able to put the bal in the end zone. Touchdown or check down is our motto as far as getting into the red zone, but we’ve got to do a better job of scoring touchdowns."
It is not hard to live with Fitzgerald's domination-he's an All-Pro, but the Seahawks going three-and-out in OT and is where blame will be placed. There is something to be said for a QB which can manage games with a solid run game, but there is also something to be said for a quarterback which can move the ball in the passing game late in games when points are needed.

Another issue which reared it's ugly head early in the game was the pass-protection for Jackson. Jackson was sacked four times in the first half. The Seahawks were also penalized seven times for 55 yards. Some of Sunday's failures can be chalked up to just a bad game where the players on the field didn't play as good as they are capable of.

Seahawks safety Earl Thomas said after the game, via the Associated Press, "We know we have a better team this year. We are young but the experience that we got this year and all the plays we made we can build on that next year."

The silver lining for Sunday's loss and the 7-9 season is the Seahawks know exactly where they need improvement and they know what they are good at. They have a great defense which has created a ton of turnovers. They'd like to pressure the quarterback more, but the identity of this franchise is defensive-with something of a run game.

Offensively the biggest weakness is the passing game. The offensive line which lost three of its starters should get healthy and then pass protection will be key. The Seahawks may not bring in another quarterback so improvement via the efficiency of one Tarvaris Jackson is paramount for 2012.

On the day Jackson finished with 222 yards 1 TD and 1 INT on 21 of 35 completions. On the season Jackson completed 271 of 450 passing attempts (60%) for 3,091 yards with 14 TDs and 13 INTs.

"This game was kind of typical of our overall season," said Jackson via the Associated Press.

"We kind of got off to a slow start and picked it up during the second half."
