Who might line up at quarterback for the Rams in their game against the Seahawks on “Monday Night Football”?
“I was thinking about lining up there myself,” Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo cracked this morning during a conference-call interview. “I was a wishbone quarterback in high school. We could pull those notebooks out.”
It’s not quite that bad, but close. A.J. Feeley, who started against the 49ers on Sunday because Sam Bradford was out with the high ankle sprain that has been bothering him, has a swollen thumb after fracturing it in the game.
“It would be tough to get him into the game,” Spagnuolo said.
So that leaves Bradford; or No. 3 QB Tom Brandstater, who started the season on the practice squad and has yet to take a snap. It also leaves Spagnuolo with his fingers and toes crossed.
“Sam, we’re still hopeful of,” the coach said. “We’ll see where we are when we get through these next few days.”
The plan is to get Brandstater ready to start, and hope that Bradford will be able to start.
“We’re always going to put the health of the player first and foremost,” Spagnuolo said. “That’s kind of where we were at last week in deciding that we didn’t want to put (Sam) in a position where it could go backwards. We just felt, and we’re hopeful, (with) another eight days that he’ll feel better and be up on his toes and just get him out of any kind of danger zone.
“Should we get to the end of the week and think that that’s not the case, then we’re going to protect Sam first. … What we’re trying to do is get him to the game. So his reps will be very, very limited and then we’ll see where we’re at when we get to Monday.”
Bradford played in the Rams’ 24-7 loss to the Seahawks in St. Louis three weeks ago. He completed 20 of 40 passes for 181 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. He also was sacked five times – including three by Seahawks defensive end Chris Clemons, who earned NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors for his effort that also featured two forced fumbles.
