Some of the memorable moments in Seahawks’ history that took place during July:
July 9, 1976: The expansion-team Seahawks open their inaugural training camp at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.
July 15, 1997: The Seahawks open training camp at Eastern Washington University, returning to Cheney after an 11-year absence.
July 16, 1986: The Seahawks open their 11th training camp, but the first at their new year-round facility in Kirkland on land leased from Northwest College. They had summered at Eastern Washington University in Cheney from 1976-85.
July 19, 1994: Ceiling tiles fall from the roof at the Kingdome, forcing the closure of the building until Nov. 5 and forcing the Seahawks to play two preseason and three regular-season games at Husky Stadium on the University of Washington campus.
July 20, 1985: The Seahawks open their 10th training camp at Eastern Washington University in Cheney. It is billed as their “final” summer at EWU, since camp would move to Kirkland in 1986. But the Seahawks returned to EWU from 1997-2006.
July 20, 2002: The grand opening of Seahawks Stadium, built on the site where the Kingdome once stood, begins with Public FanFare Days and is followed by three weeks of public open houses.
July 25, 1975: Season-ticket applications are mailed for the team’s inaugural season in 1976.
July 26, 2010: Tod Leiweke resigns as CEO of Vulcan Sports & Entertainment to become CEO and part owner of the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning. Leiweke had joined the Seahawks in June of 2003.
July 27, 2005: Shaun Alexander signs a one-year contract after being named the Seahawks’ franchise player. He would be voted the league MVP that season after scoring a then-NFL record 28 touchdowns and leading the league in rushing.
July 28, 1975: The team begins accepting season-ticket applications for its inaugural season in 1976 and 24,168 are received on the first day.
July 28, 2007: Training camp opens in Kirkland for the first time since 1996, after the Seahawks had summered at Eastern Washington University in Cheney from 1997-2007.
July 29, 1995: Steve Largent is inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Largent, the NFL’s all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards and touchdown catches when he retired after the 1989 season, was elected to the Hall in January – in his first year of eligibility.
July 31, 2009: Training camp opens for the first time at Virginia Mason Athletic Center – the team’s state-of-the-art facility in Renton – and for the first time in franchise history practices on the West side are open to the public.
July 31, 2010: The Seahawks open their first training camp under Pete Carroll, who was hired as head coach in January. In his inaugural season, the team would win the NFC West title and upset the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints in the first round of the playoffs.
