When Steve Largent retired after the 1989 season, he was the NFL’s all-time leader in receptions (819), receiving yards (13,089) and touchdown catches (100).
Any Seahawks fan worth his 12th Man jersey knows that.
But what would Largent’s totals have been without the 57-day players’ strike that forced the cancellation of eight games in 1982?
Higher, of course, but by how much? Simply doubling his totals from the eight games he played in ’82 would have increased Largent’s season totals to 68 receptions for 986 yards and six TDs – pushing his career totals to 853 for 13,582 and 103.
Adding the rounded-up averages from his 13½ seasons – 61 for 970 and seven – upped the career totals even more, if only slightly.
But 1982 was smack in the middle of his prime-years span (1978-86), when Largent averaged 72 receptions for 1,161 yards and nine TDs in eight full seasons. So those numbers would have bumped his NFL-record totals to 858 receptions for 13,757 yards and 106 TDs.
This might be an exercise in crying over spilt milk, but then Largent did sport a milk moostache in an ad for the Washington Dairy Farmers in 1980. Check out the moo-sical Largent, and also-moostached sidekick Jim Zorn, in this video.
