Here are five things to love about the NFL from the sixth weekend of the regular season:
One. Tom Brady. While watching the Patriots’ game against the Cowboys, the thought was that this item would be an ode to Brady being human after all. Sacked three times and hit at least eight other times. Two interceptions. A valiant effort in a losing cause. Then Brady came up with one of his think-again efforts that was – dare we say – Montana-esque. An 80-yard drive in 10 plays to Brady’s game-winning TD pass to tight end Aaron Hernandez with 22 seconds remaining. Brady was 8 of 9 for 78 yards on the drive, and threaded his 8-yard TD pass after reading that the Cowboys were taking away his first option. Patriots 20, Cowboys 16. Brady? Just another overdrive of a drive – his 32nd game-winner when the Pats were trailing or tied in the fourth quarter.
Two. The 49ers. Post-game handshakes aside, the NFC West-leading 49ers pushed their record to 5-1 by rallying from a 10-0 deficit to score 10 points in the final two minutes and claim a 25-19 victory at Detroit against the previously unbeaten Lions. The 49ers, who were on the edge of losing to the Seahawks in their opener at home before Ted Ginn Jr. came to the rescue, have won four in a row. And three of those wins have come where West Coast teams usually stumble – the Eastern time zone. They beat the Bengals 13-8 in Cincinnati and the Eagles 24-23 in Philly. But Lions (five) came into this game with more wins than the Bengals (three) and Eagles (one) had combined after five weeks.
Three. Lechler to Boss? The Raiders didn’t just beat the Browns, what proved to be the game-winner in their 24-17 victory came when punter Shane Lechler passed to former Western Oregon tight end Kevin Boss for a 35-yard touchdown late in the third quarter. Lechler’s passer rating? Perfection (158.3), as he was 1 of 1 for 35 yards and a TD. It also was Boss’ only catch of the game, and only his seventh of the season.
Four. Kurt Coleman. The Eagles were under fire in Philly after their 1-4 start, and the heat was hottest under the defense. Coleman, a second-year strong safety, must like it hot. He intercepted not one, not two, but three passes as the Eagles held on for a 20-13 victory over the Redskins in Washington. The Eagles also held the Redskins to 42 rushing yards.
Five. The Seahawks’ bye week. From Tarvaris Jackson’s sore shoulder, to Marshawn Lynch’s sore ankle, to Zach Miller’s sore neck, to Max Unger’s sore foot, the Seahawks sorely needed those four days off.
