Good morning. Here’s what’s “out there” about the Seahawks for today, Aug. 23:
Jerry Brewer at the Seattle Times provides a voice of reason to the hysteria ignited by the Seahawks’ less-than-inspiring performance in their preseason home opener. Says Brewer: “It’s a warning label that you refuse to read: Do not draw strong conclusions from NFL exhibition games. The urge is always there to ignore the instructions, overdose and overreact. It’s especially difficult this year because the lockout left people hungrier than ever for football, but the teams are frighteningly unprepared to impress. There were no minicamps, no organized team activities, no news on how your favorite squad was coming together. No time for a meticulous, gradual process. And now, no time for patience, either. Just throw it together and throw it out there. And judge — quickly and decisively. The season is only 19 days away. It feels like 19 hours away, but the quality of play suggests these teams are 119 days away. What to do? Relax.”
Mike Sando of ESPN.com just spent a week with the Rams and files this “Camp Confidential” report. Says Sando: “Unfazed by the NFL lockout and energized by a new offense, Sam Bradford shatters perceptions of him as a young player scrambling to make up lost ground. ‘We’re going to push the ball down the field,’ the Rams’ second-year quarterback says with some excitement. ‘I think we’re going to be aggressive.’ Building steadily for the long term isn’t the focus for Bradford and the Rams’ new offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniels. They’re living week to week, play to play.” The Seahawks play the Rams Nov. 20 in St. Louis and Dec. 12 at CenturyLink Field.

The Seahawks won’t see former O’Dea High School standout Taylor Mays in their Sept. 11 regular-season opener against the 49ers in San Francisco, but they will see him Oct. 30 – when the Cincinnati Bengals visit CenturyLink Field. Mays was traded yesterday, and NFL.com has the details. Former USC teammate and current Bengals linebacker Ray Maualuga on Mays: “He’s a competitor, great teammate, he works hard in the weight room and classroom. I think he’ll come in and learn from the veterans.”
