Good morning. Here’s what’s “out there” about the Seahawks for today, July 12:
Four months of the lockout has taken its toll on the folks at ESPN.com. As a diversion to the constant – and seemingly constantly changing – updates on the labor situation, they are compiling a “Dream Team of Tomorrow,” and letting you vote for the players who will be the best at their positions in 2014-15-16. Do you think Russell Okung will emerge as one of the best tackles in the NFL? How about free safety Earl Thomas? Here’s your chance to be heard, on a national level. Vote for the offensive team here, and the defensive team here.
Mike Sando, the NFC West blogger at ESPN.com, offers his views on some players in the division who might deserve recognition on the “Dream Team.” Says Sando: “Safety Earl Thomas and tackle Russell Okung were the only Seattle players listed (on the ballots). (Defensive tackle Brandon) Mebane also has star potential in the right scheme, Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc. has suggested. But Thomas and Okung possess more frontline talent. Seattle selected them among the first 14 choices of the 2010 draft.”
Monte Poole of the Bay Area News Group checks in with Marshawn Lynch, who is looking to repaint his image with the Seahawks. Says Poole: “The Seattle Seahawks running back realizes he’s a symbol of influence, certainly to youth, and doesn’t want to fumble away his opportunity. He’s making a valiant effort.”
Eric Williams at the News Tribune takes a closer look at Byron Maxwell, the cornerback from Clemson who was the Seahawks’ sixth-round pick in the April NFL Draft. Says Williams: “There’s no denying that Maxwell has the physical ability to play in the NFL. At 6-foot-1 and 207 pounds, he bench pressed 225 pounds 24 times, ran a 4.46 40-yard dash and broad jumped 10 feet, 4 inches, all marks that placed him among the top 10 corners at February’s NFL Scouting Combine. Maxwell, 21, is a hard hitter and was a valuable special teams player at Clemson, finishing with 45 career special teams tackles. But what Maxwell will have to prove is that he has fluid enough hip movement and route anticipation to remain a corner for Seattle, where he will receive some intense competition for a spot on the final roster with players who already have some experience in defensive coordinator Gus Bradley’s system like Walter Thurmond, Roy Lewis, Kennard Cox, Marcus Brown and Josh Pinkard.”
For the give-us-this-day-our-daily-labor-update item, Albert Breer at NFL.com says the preseason games are “hanging in the balance” as lawyers for both sides continue to meet in efforts to reach a new CBA. Offers Breer: “The format for this week is similar to the previous two, with language and details handled by the lawyers earlier in the week, and owners and players joining later to negotiate core issues.”
