Good morning. Here’s what’s “out there” about the Seahawks for today, June 16:
Will Matt Hasselbeck be the Seahawks’ quarterback this season? Mike Sando at ESPN.com provides a link to an interview Hasselbeck did with ESPN Milwaukee. Hasselbeck will become an unrestricted free agent when the league year finally begins, so it’s not a slam-dunk that he’ll be back for an 11th season. Said Hasselbeck: “I definitely am hopeful to be back here, but at the same time, I understand that with a new GM, with a new regime, they sometimes want to go in a different direction. That could happen, too. I am prepared for whatever.”
Also from Sando: Where does Brandon Mebane fit with the Seahawks? In the third in a series of articles asking that question about a player for each team in the NFC West, Sando says, “Bringing him back would make the most sense for Seattle, which needs all the starting-caliber defensive linemen it can get.” Still to be resolved is whether the fifth-year defensive tackle will be an unrestricted free agent or a restricted free agent, and how much attention he will draw from other teams.
Adam Caplan of Fox Sports reviews the Seahawks’ 2010 season and 2011 draft with an eye to this season. Says Caplan: “Despite making the playoffs last season — albeit with a 7-9 record — the Seahawks still have plenty of needs to fill coming out of this year’s NFL draft.”
Kerry Byrne offers a look at one of the Seahawks’ NFC West rivals at SI.com, with this hmmm headline: Why Rams D will dominate in 2011. Says Byrne (or should than be warns?): “(Coach Steve) Spagnuolo’s Rams are quickly following the same statistical blueprint that his Giants first drew up in 2007: they’re building a contender around one of the most dominating defensive fronts in the game. The improvements from 2009, Spagnuolo’s first year in St. Louis, to 2010 were nothing short of amazing.”
In his latest rankings of positions, Pat Kirwan at NFL.com takes on the pass-rushers. Somehow, the Seahawks’ Chris Clemons rates only “also considered” mention, despite producing a career-high 11 sacks in his first season with Seattle. The Vikings’ Jared Allen tops Kirwan’s 25-deep rankings. As Kirwan says, “Quarterback is the most important position on the field, but the men who rush the passer are a close second.”
For the give-us-this-day-our-daily-labor-update item, we offer Ross Tucker’s four steps to reaching an agreement from ESPN.com. Says Tucker, a former NFL lineman: “It is time to take a commonsense approach to solving this thing, one anybody can understand. That’s why I’ve come up with a four-point plan I think both parties should be able to live with.”
Mike Freeman at CBSSports.com says “cautiously optimistic” is the term to describe the situation after the latest round of meetings between representatives of the owners and players. Offers Freeman: “Not all of the team representatives have been briefed on the latest news from the labor talks, but over the past 24 hours some were during informal phone calls and texts. The message from the higher echelon of the NFLPA is that progress continues to be made, according to several sources familiar with the situation.”
